MET GROUP

In line with its strategy and commitment to energy transition, MET Group is continuously expanding its energy asset portfolio across Europe. As part of its growth, not only new assets - especially solar parks - are established, but MET Group also pays special attention to the development of existing assets and renewing of sites. Dunamenti Power Station is a remarkable example where recently two projects have been commissioned: MET Group put into operation the country's first 2-hour cycle energy storage unit (4 MW / 8 MWh) which was installed in September 2022, and a new 30 MW electric boiler was built with a 1,500 m3 thermal storage tank in November 2023 in Százhalombatta city. The primary goal of both facilities is to provide balancing energy service which promotes the security of supply of the electricity system and better utilization of renewable energy sources through carbon-neutral technologies.

While these two were under construction, also at the site of the Dunamenti Power Station MET has started to develop a bigger energy storage facility with total capacity of 40 MW / 80 MWh. MET Danube Energy Storage LLC. was founded in 2023 as a 100% owned subsidiary of MET Group and as a "sister company" of the Dunamenti Power Plant, for the purpose of implementing and operating the new, 40 MW energy storage unit and further potential electricity storage developments.

MET Danube Energy Storage

MET Danube Energy Storage LLC is to provide flexibility to the increasing needs of the gradually transforming electricity system and support TSO to meet these needs by applying carbon-neutral electricity storage technology. These objectives are common with the European Union's 2030 climate policy and are also aligned with the national energy strategy: ensures balancing serves and increases penetration of carbon neutral power generation in national energy mix, while reducing the system's import energy needs. The location of the investment is known as former units of Dunamenti Power Plant – so-called and now recultivated ‘BEADC’ steam turbine units, built in 1960s. The EPC contractor of the new 20-10-10 MW energy storage units to be built is Forest-Vill Ltd, while the OEM of BESS is Huawei Technologies.

Main parameters:

  • Nominal power: 20-10-10 MW

  • Nominal storage capacity: 40-20-20 MWh

  • Grid connection level: 132 kV, MAVIR Dunamenti substation

  • Charging duration: 2 hours

  • Discharging duration: 2 hours

  • Storage technology: LFP (lithium-ion)

  • Planned commissioning: 2025 summer

  • Lifespan: 15 years with one cycle per day

The new BESS units are part of the Hungary Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) “Installation of grid utilization BESS at market participants” program which made it possible to start the construction. MET Danube Energy Storage LLC. has been granted with non-refundable 2,690 and 1,350 billion HUF to its applications of the 20 MW (RRF-6.5.1-23-2024-00037) and the 10 MW (RRF-6.5.1-23-2024-00039).
