MET Danube Energy Storage LLC., a member of the Swiss-based MET Group, is building an energy storage system in Százhalombatta with a total nominal power of 40 MW and a storage capacity of 80 MWh, of which 60 MWh is co-financed by the EU through ‘Hungary Recovery and Resilience Facility’ support, under the "Installation of Network Energy Storage at Energy Market Operators" program, No. RRF-6.5.1-23-2024-00037. The 20 MW storage units, which will be built with a non-reimbursable grant of 2.690 billion HUF, are in line with the European Union's 2030 climate policy and the Hungarian energy strategy.
MET Group is building new BESS units with a total power of 40 MW and capacity of 80 MWh (i.e. two-hour cycle) on the dismantled and recultivated site of the Dunamenti Power Plant, originally built in the 1960s. Of this capacity, 60 MWh will be built with the support of non-reimbursable grant from the EU fund, awarded under the "Installation of grid energy storage at energy market operators" tender. Commissioning of the units is expected to start in summer 2025.
To support the energy transition, energy companies worldwide are working to replace fossil fuels, a process that represents numerous challenges and requires extensive planning. MET Group took significant steps by installing the country's first two-hour cycle energy storage unit (4 MW / 8 MWh) at the Dunamenti Power Plant site in September 2022. Additionally, a 30 MW electric boiler plant and an accompanying 1,500 m3 thermal storage tank were installed at the Százhalombatta site in November 2023. The primary objective of both installations is to enhance grid flexibility, contribute to supply security of supply in the electricity system and to optimize the use of renewable energy sources.
The investment is part of the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), a dedicated instrument established by EU Member States to support recovery efforts, enabling the launch of all the three. Of the three tenders submitted by MET Danube Energy Storage LLC., the project executing company, two were awarded a total of 4.039 billion HUF in non-reimbursable investment grant. Huawei Technologies is the OEM of the BESS units, while Forest-Vill Ltd. in the EPC contractor role.
MET Group aims to meet the increasing flexibility needs of an evolving electricity system through carbon-neutral electricity storage technology. This objective aligns with the European Union's 2030 climate goals and Hungary’s energy strategy: to facilitate the integration of carbon-neutral power generation in the national energy mix, while reducing reliance on imported energy. The EU-funded Hungary Recovery and Resilience Facility seeks to establish 440 MW / 880 MWh of new grid energy storage in Hungary by mid of 2026.
Bases in Switzerland, MET Group has consistently expanded its portfolio of green energy assets in recent years. The Group now develops, builds and operates solar power and wind plants across Bulgaria, Spain, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and Poland, and Hungary.
